Command Prompt (executable name cmd.exe) is the Microsoft-supplied command-line interpreter on OS/2, Windows CE and on Windows NT-based operating systems (including Windows 2000, Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2003 and Server 2008). It is the analog of COMMAND.COM in MS-DOS and Windows 9x (where it is called MS-DOS Prompt) systems, or of the Unix shells used on Unix-like systems.
There are several ways you can launch the command prompt within Windows 7:
Click Start, type cmd in the Start Search box, and press Enter.
Choose Start, All Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt.
If Command Prompt is on the Start menu, choose Start, Command Prompt.
The command prompt opens and looks similar to the below screen shot.
