How To Copy Text From And Paste Into The Command Prompt

You can copy text from and paste text into the Command Prompt window. The process is a little different depending on how the QuickEdit Mode option is configured.
You configure QuickEdit Mode on the Options tab of the Command Prompt Properties window, shown in Figure 1-6. You can access this window by right-clicking the title bar
of the Command Prompt window and choosing Properties.
The QuickEdit Mode option changes the way that you can cut text from and paste text into the command line. The Insert Mode option below it works just like the Insert key of the keyboard. It allows you to insert characters into the command line when enabled, or overwrite characters in the command line when disabled.
If you want your changes to the Options tab to apply any time the Command Prompt window is open instead of applying only to the current session, right-click the title bar of the Command Prompt window, click Defaults, and then click the Options tab (if it’s not already displayed) and make your changes.

How you copy text from the command prompt window depends on whether QuickEdit Mode is enabled or disabled.
If QuickEdit Mode is enabled (checked): Use the mouse to select text, and then press Enter to copy the selected text.
If QuickEdit Mode is not enabled (unchecked): Right-click in the Command Prompt window and click Mark. Use the mouse to select text, and then press Enter to copy the selected text.
Both of these methods copy the text to the Clipboard. You can then paste the text into any other application, such as Notepad or Microsoft Word.
Paste Text into the Command Prompt Window You can paste any text that is on the Clipboard into the command line.
If QuickEdit Mode is enabled (checked): Right-click in the Command Prompt window and the data is pasted where you clicked. Caution: If the pasted data includes a new line from the Enter key, you’ll execute the command as soon as you paste it.
If QuickEdit Mode is not enabled (unchecked): Right-click in the Command Prompt window and click Paste.
If you copy the carriage return with the command, the carriage return will be pasted into the Command Prompt window. In other words, when you paste the command, it will execute.

How to Change the Priority of Network Connections in Windows

Do you ever plug in your wired network card while your wireless card is still enabled? Ever wonder how Windows chooses which one to use? Here’s how to see the default priority—and how to change it if you want.

Note: there’s almost never any reason to change this, as Windows does a good job of choosing the right connection. Still, if you want windows to work differently with it, this is how you would do it.

How to Change the Network Card Priority

To change the priority, head into Network and Sharing Center and click on the Change adapter settings link on the left-hand side—or you can quickly open the network connections list by typing ncpa.cpl into the Start Menu search box.

How to Change the Priority of Network Connections in Windows

From here on there are two ways to change this…

Method 1:

  • press the ALT key on the keyboard,
  • Then click the “Advanced” menu
  • Choose “Advanced Settings”.
  • In the window that pops up, use the arrows on the right side to move the Local Area Connection above the wireless connections.
  • Click OK.

That's It.

Method 2:

Now that we’re in change adapter settings…

Choose the network card that you want to change the priority for, right-click it, and choose Properties from the menu.

How to Change the Priority of Network Connections in Windows 7

Now select the Internet Protocol Version 4 item in the list, and click the Properties button.

Change the Priority of Network Connections in Windows

Now click the Advanced button at the bottom of this window…. getting tired of clicking yet?

And now, finally, we’re at the place where you can make the change. Uncheck the box for Automatic Metric, and then type a number into the Interface Metric textbox. You can consult the list that we found in the command prompt earlier to know what metric to assign—you’ll probably want to assign it something higher than 1, since that’s used for the loopback adapter.

You may want to go ahead and change the priority for your other card as well, just to be sure that it is assigned the proper priority.

Steps To Reset All User Permissions To Default

This article will explain how to change the user permission on Windows (Vista and Windows 7) to its default settings.

Use this method only if you have accidentally changed some user permission on your Windows machine . I can't change the permissions back because it tells me that I do not have access to certain folders.

It is very important that if you have created System Restore points try to restore your system back to previous dates on which your system worked without the above mentioned problem.

To reset system permissions, follow the steps:

  • You will need to run ‘Subinacl Tool’ to reset the permission to normal.  Download subinacl.msi from the following link, and save it on the desktop.

  • On the desktop, double-click subinacl.msi to install the tool.
  • Select C:\Windows\System32 as the destination folder.

This step assumes that Windows is installed in C:\Windows. If Windows is installed elsewhere, select the appropriate path to .\System32.

  • Open Notepad.
  • Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad window.

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f

  • In Notepad click File, Save As, and then type: reset.cmd
  • In Notepad click Save as type, and then select All Files (*.*).

Steps To Reset All User Permissions To Default

  • Save the reset.cmd file to your desktop, and close Notepad.
  • Double-click the reset.cmd file to reset the Windows Update permissions. If this gives you any error message, then right click on reset.cmd and choose “Run As Administrator” as shown in the below screen shot. And if you are asked with any question, give Yes to continue.

Steps To Reset All User Permissions To Default 2

This step may take several minutes, so please be patient. When the permissions have been reset, you will be prompted with "Finished, press any key to continue."

  • Press any key to complete the installation.

Check if you have the right permissions to all the folders for all users.

This works for Windows 7 as well as Vista. How do I restore security settings to the default settings?

What Makes Windows 7 Faster And Easier

Windows 7 makes everyday tasks faster and easier, to make our PC work the way we want it to, and to make it possible to do new things. And that's exactly what its doing. See how it's coming to life.

  • Improved taskbar and full-screen previews
  • Jump Lists
  • Desktop enhancements
  • Windows Search
  • Internet Explorer 8
  • Accelerators
  • Web Slices
  • Better device management
  • HomeGroup
  • View Available Network (VAN)
Improved taskbar and full-screen previews
The taskbar at the bottom of your screen is what you use to launch programs and switch between them when they're open. In Windows 7 you can pin any program to the taskbar so it’s always just a click away, and you can rearrange the icons on the taskbar just by clicking and dragging. We’ve made the icons considerably bigger, too, so they’re easier to use. Hover over the icons and you’ll see thumbnails of every file or window that open in that program, and if you hover over the thumbnail, you’ll see a full-screen preview of that window. Move the cursor off the thumbnail and the full-screen preview disappears.

    Jump Lists
Windows 7 focused on keeping the things we use most right in front of us. For example, The new Jump List feature. It's a handy way to quickly reach the files we've been working with. To see the files we've used recently, just right click on the icon on taskbar. So right-clicking on the Word icon will show our most recent Word documents. Plus, if there are other files we want to keep handy, we can just pin them to the Jump List so they’ll always appear. That way, the documents we’re likely to want are just a couple clicks away.

Some programs, such as Windows Media Player, can pre-populate their Jump Lists with common tasks. For example, on the Jump List for Windows Media Player, we’ll see options to Play All Music or resume our last playlist. On the Jump List for Internet Explorer, we’ll see frequently and recently viewed websites. With some programs, we’ll even have quick access to tasks that, in the past, were only available from within the program, such as composing a new e-mail message.

    Desktop enhancements
Windows 7 simplifies how we work with the windows on your desktop. You'll have more intuitive ways to open, close, resize, and arrange them.
With Windows 7, it’s easier to do things we do all of the time. For example, before, when we wanted to compare two open windows, we had to manually resize our open windows to show them side by side. With Snaps, we can simply grab a window and pull it to either side edge of the screen to fill half the screen. Snap windows to both sides, and it’s easier than ever to compare those windows.

Another thing we may want to do is quickly see our gadgets or grab a file from our  desktop. To see our desktop just move our mouse to the lower right corner of our desktop. That'll make all the open Windows transparent—so our desktop is immediately visible. Want to get all but one window out of your way? Grab the top of that window, shake it and all the other open windows will minimize to the taskbar. Shake the window again, and they’ll all come back.

    Windows Search
Looking for something on our PC? What’s our first instinct? If you use the web a lot, you probably start by looking around for a search box.
Now, we can find things on our computer the same way. Introduced with Windows Vista, Windows Search helps us vfind virtually anything on our PC quickly and easily. Windows 7 also makes search results more relevant and easier to understand. Also know how to make search faster and simple in Windows Vista.

Looking for a file, e-mail, or application? While you can easily look through folders and menus, there’s an even faster way. Just click on the Start button and you’ll see a search box at the bottom of the Start menu. Just enter a word or few letters in the name or file you want, and you’ll get an organized list of results.

Windows 7 uses libraries to show all content of a particular type in one spot. Say you’ve got photos in several locations on your PC. A lot will be in your Photos folder. But you might have some in documents folders too. Your photos library makes it easy for you to browse and use all your photos, no matter where they are on your PC.

By collecting things into a single view, libraries make it simpler to find what you’re looking for. They’re even more powerful with Windows Search. You can search your Libraries using filters to customize your search. For example, when you’re looking for music you can search by album. Or search for photos by the date they were taken. You can go to your Documents Library, click on authors, and see all the documents on your computer sorted by author name.

    Internet Explorer 8
Available now, Internet Explorer 8 helps you do what you want online, faster. With innovations to the address bar, search, tabs, and the Favorites bar, Internet Explorer 8 brings you more information, with less effort.

    Instant Search
To start, as you type a search request you'll immediately start seeing relevant suggestions from your chosen search provider, complete with images when available. The twist: search will also use your browsing history to narrow the suggestions. If you see what you're looking for, you can go right to the list without finishing the request.

    Accelerators
There are online services you use all the time. Like mapping a location. With Accelerators, you can highlight a bit of information on any page, click on the blue Accelerators icon, and choose from a variety of relevant services. So if you highlight a street address and right click, the Live Maps Accelerator will show a map preview right there on the page. In addition to mapping, you’ll find Accelerators for e-mailing, blogging, searching, translating, and sharing information. Popular services including eBay and Facebook offer special Accelerators you can use with their sites.

    Web Slices
A Web Slice is something you use when you need to track information on a website, but you don’t want to keep going to the site. Use a web slice for things like auction items, sports scores, entertainment columns, and weather reports. When the content you're watching changes, you’ll see it right away in the Web Slice in your Favorites Bar.

    Better device management
One of the great things about PCs is how they let us use such a wide array of devices. In the past, you had to use several different screens to manage different types of devices. But With Windows 7, you'll use a single Devices and Printers screen to connect, manage, and use whatever printers, phones, and other devices you have on-hand.
A new technology in Windows 7 called Device Stage takes device management a step further. Device Stage helps you interact with any compatible device connected to your computer. From Device Stage you can see device status and run common tasks from a single window. There are even pictures of the devices which makes it really easy to see what's there. Device manufacturers can customize Device Stage. For example, if your camera manufacturer offers a custom version of Device Stage, then when you plug your camera into your PC, you could see things like the number of photos on your camera and links to helpful information.

    HomeGroup
Today, you may have a network in your home that you use to share an internet connection. But it can be hard to share other things, like files and printers. Do you have one or more computers in your home but only one printer? If you’re like most people, when you need to print a file that’s on your laptop in your bedroom on the printer in your den, you probably e-mail the file from one PC to another or transfer it on a USB drive. And if you need to find a file but don’t know which computer it’s stored on, chances are you’re in for a long night as you traipse from PC to PC and search each one.
HomeGroup, a new feature in Windows 7, makes connecting the computers in your home a painless process. HomeGroup is set up automatically when you add the first PC running Windows 7 to your home network. Adding more PCs running Windows 7 to the HomeGroup is an easy process. You can specify exactly what you want to share from each PC with all the PCs in the HomeGroup. Then, sharing files across the various PCs in your home—and many other devices—is as easy as if all your data were on a single hard drive. So you can store digital photos on a computer in your den and easily access them from a laptop anywhere in your home. Similarly, once in a HomeGroup, the printer in your den is shared automatically with all of the PCs in your home.

    View Available Network (VAN)
Windows 7 makes viewing and connecting to all of your networks simple and consistent. You'll always have one-click access to available networks, regardless of whether those networks are based on Wi-Fi, mobile broadband, dial-up, or your corporate VPN.

How To Use Windows Safe Mode

Safe mode is the best option when someone has called saying that their new PC is not booting properly, as it lets a technician determine roughly whether there's a problem with the hardware or a problem with software that's been installed since the PC left the store.

Unfortunately, in our experience many users have little more than a vague awareness of the existence of 'safe-mode' in Windows, and no idea how to get into it or why they would want to.

Here is something you need to understand Windows Safe mode and when and how to use the Safe Mode.

How To Use Windows Safe Mode

When to Use Safe Mode in Windows:

Windows hangs, restarts by itself, or crashes with a blue screen error, or your video display is garbled and you cannot get control of the display resolution.

The Solution For The Above, and How To Use Windows Safe Mode:

    • Restart your PC and press the F8 key at the end of the BIOS to access Windows' start menu.
    • Select the Safe Mode option and let Windows start up.
    • Log onto Windows if prompted.
    • Click OK or Yes to acknowledge the "running in safe mode" dialog.
    • Use Safe Mode to reset any recent configuration changes, uninstall recently installed hardware, or run System Restore to return the system to a working state.

If you don't know what you are doing, and if you are in doubt, call your hardware vendor for support.

Safe Mode uses only basic files and drivers (mouse, except serial mice; monitor; keyboard; mass storage; base video; default minimal system services; and no network connections).

In Safe Mode, your desktop display is limited to 640 480 resolution, allowing you to select another resolution to be used after restart—helpful if you have video driver or resolution selection problems. Many 32-bit device drivers are not loaded, limiting the number and types of programs you can use—for instance a Pinnacle PCTV tuner card cannot be used in Safe Mode.

As well, entries in Windows Registry Run and Run Once keys are bypassed in Safe Mode, an essential feature for removing spyware and unwanted programs that will not go away in Normal Mode. If your computer does not start successfully using safe mode, you might need to use the Recovery Console feature to repair your system.

Additional Safe Mode options exist—Safe Mode with Networking and Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Safe Mode with Networking adds basic networking components to the Spartan mix of few device drivers and features so you can access LAN and web-based resources as needed. Safe Mode with Command Prompt presents the command-line interface instead of the Windows GUI, most useful if you are having trouble with and need to repair displaying Windows' graphics.

Solving Error Code: 0x80070646, Error Code: 646, Error Code: 1606 When Using Windows Update or Microsoft Update

When you try to install updates for Microsoft Office applications using Windows Update or Microsoft Update, you may receive one of the following error codes.

Error Code: 0x80070646 Or Error Code: 646 Or “Error 1606 Could not access network location %APPDATA%”

This update problem occurs when Windows Installer encounters an error. Error code 0x80070646 and error code 646 are generated by Windows Installer. These generic errors indicate that Windows Installer encountered a problem. When you encounter the errors that are described in the "Symptoms" section, the problem may be caused by an incorrect value in the registry.

    Solution:

To automatically update the affected registry keys, click the button in the "Fix it for me" section. If you would rather verify and update these keys yourself, go to the "Let me fix it myself" section.

    Fix it for me
