How To Choose Memory Card For Your Device

A memory card or flash card is an electronic flash memory data storage device used for storing digital information. They are commonly used in many electronic devices, including digital cameras, mobile phones, laptop computers, MP3 players, and video game consoles. They are small, re-recordable, and able to retain data without power.

Memory cards offer a number of advantages over the hard disk drive: they're much smaller and lighter, extremely portable, completely silent, allow more immediate access, and are less prone to mechanical damage.

In comparison, however, the hard disk still offers a compelling advantage: currently, a memory card (for example, CompactFlash) with a 16GB capacity typically costs similar to a hard drive with a capacity of 500GB.

How To Choose Memory Card For Your Device

Ok, let us see the factors that you need to consider before choosing a memory card for your device.

The SDHC (Secure Digital High capacity ) cards are the most common form of data storage devices now a days. Current Version running is 2.0 and 3.0.

They are basically classified on two properties

1. The first is obviously the capacity ( 2GB , 4 Gb etc )

2. The second and the more important is the minimum stable data transfer speed (DTS).

As per this category there are classes in which these cards falls

  • a. CLASS 2 Min. DTS of 2 Mbps.
  • b. CLASS 4 Min. DTS of 4 Mbps.
  • c. CLASS 6 Min. DTS of 6 Mbps.
  • d. CLASS 10 Min. DTS of 10 Mbps.

The capacity depends on how much you want to have in but the class depends upon the device in which you are putting the card in.

If you have to put it into some mobile then class 4 will do good but if you are putting it into some digital camera or camcorder that is HD then it's good to put in class 6 or above.

So make your choice because if you have a device that is not capable of transferring data as per the lowest DTS then no use of buying a higher class.
