Yet another Windows Update failed. And now, DEP shut down McAfee and other assorted fun stuff:
DEP suddenly closing all antivirus including McAfee program. And you may also notice that your computer is responding snail-slow, for example, starting your PC or restating may take more than 10 minutes to load my desktop.
This applies to Windows 7 and Windows Vista and do normally have when you have automatically updated KB 2467175 Through Windows Update.
Please check if your system has an auto-update for windows, and a message will state that 1 of the updates was unable to be installed.
Some times when you load your Desktop, a DEP messages will pop again with a message that your McAfee was closing and suddenly the icon in the tray will be disappeared and the anti-virus program thus get closed. And you cannot run any anti-virus program now.
What Really Happens:
KB2467175 was released on 12 April 2011 and tons of users ended up having problems getting it installed. Turns out that there was a problem on Microsoft's end (a "detection issue") so Microsoft re-released the update on 21 April 2011. But by then, the update servers were swamped by Windows 7 computers worldwide trying to download & install (often repeatedly) some other updates which also had "detection issues." <sigh> So it sounds like your Vista computer got caught up in this "Pefect Storm" mælstrom, unfortunately for you.
That being said, you've got a very serious problem on your hands if McAfee Internet Security is still failing to load and/or if you cannot update its definitions manually. Guess I'll know more about that when you post your follow-up.
Update: At least one (1) new, non-security update will be released for Vista computers on Tuesday, 24 May 2011.
