If you have recently installed an ATI HD 5770 card, you may encounter this problem whilst running most games.
Games such as Arkham Asylum, FC2, Just Cause 2 etc, randomly freeze during gameplay. With some applications you can able to either Alt-Tab or Alt-F4 back to the desktop, and with most of the other applications, you will be forced to restart the system with the power button.
And when you manage to get back to the desktop, the following message will be displayed "display driver amdkmdap stopped responding but has recovered".
The general consensus is that this is a driver issue.
The following update 'Windows6.0-KB938194-x64.msu' will resolves the following issues:
The computer stops responding, and you receive a "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" error message. You can restart the computer only by pressing the computer's power button."
However when I try to install this upgrade I get a dialogue box saying "The update does not apply to your system." I also tried the 'Windows6.0-KB940105-x64.msu' update but, got the same message despite the release note saying it's compatible with the Home Basic edition.
You may receive the error message “The update does not apply to your system” if the update is already installed on the computer or the latest Service Pack is present on the computer that includes this update.
Solution:

I would suggest you to download and install the latest graphic card drivers from the device manufacturer’s website. Please note that, the link will differ for different manufacturer. You have to Google for the right driver. For the above problem stated, here is the link…
You may receive the error message “The update does not apply to your system” if the update is already installed on the computer or the latest Service Pack is present on the computer that includes this update.
It seems that hardware accelerated plugins and apps like Adobe Flash, Firefox 4, Java, Quicktime, or IE9 are triggering this crash, because 3D games seem to be unaffected.
