Fix Windows Boot Configuration Error 0xc000014c

How to fix if Windows failed to start with the following error message.  "A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart the computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."
3. Click "Repair your computer."
File: \Boot\BCD
Status: 0xc000014c
Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data.
This error applies to Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP (SP3).
Solution:
This should only be used by someone that has a pretty good knowledge of pc's though. And I wouldn't normally hesitate to run a Repair on the OS, but what if your PC manufacturer didn't send any operating system discs with your PC?
  1. Use MiniPE Disk And boot into your system.
  2. Go to the root (C:) location of the file in question 'bootmgr' This will be an hidden file 'bootmgr' without any extension which was executing before Windows.
  3. Rename that file to 'bootmgr.wtf'
  4. Restart your machine
  5. Thats it, your machine should load normally.
I wouldn't recommend this as a permanent fix, the best solution for this problem is still to do an OS repair. But if you have no other option, this seems to have done the trick.

Optional:
  • Run CHKDSK and optionaly you can also run MBRFIX
  • Do a full virus scan on here
  • And run a bunch of integrity checks to make sure all is well
Most importantly the worst part is over.
