How to fix if Windows failed to start with the following error message. "A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart the computer.2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."3. Click "Repair your computer."File: \Boot\BCDStatus: 0xc000014cInfo: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data.
This error applies to Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP (SP3).
Solution:
This should only be used by someone that has a pretty good knowledge of pc's though. And I wouldn't normally hesitate to run a Repair on the OS, but what if your PC manufacturer didn't send any operating system discs with your PC?
- Use MiniPE Disk And boot into your system.
- Go to the root (C:) location of the file in question 'bootmgr' This will be an hidden file 'bootmgr' without any extension which was executing before Windows.
- Rename that file to 'bootmgr.wtf'
- Restart your machine
- Thats it, your machine should load normally.
I wouldn't recommend this as a permanent fix, the best solution for this problem is still to do an OS repair. But if you have no other option, this seems to have done the trick.
Optional:
- Run CHKDSK and optionaly you can also run MBRFIX
- Do a full virus scan on here
- And run a bunch of integrity checks to make sure all is well
Most importantly the worst part is over.
