Fix Errors 3002 and 3200 While Upgrading To iOS 5

If you have been trying to upgrade your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch to the all-new iOS 5 but getting unknown errors with codes that read like 3200 or 3002, here’s one possible solution.

iOS 5 is fantastic (I would also recommend you to read one of my earlier post about the Difference Between iPhone 4S and iPhone 4), but I guess the apple servers were overloaded as so many were trying to update their device to the latest iOS. But the following method should work fine for you.

I have tried this to two of my friends to update their iPad 1 and iPad 2 with iOS 5 and the software installed without any problems. I guess this should also work for you, if you were not successful in the past due to the errors 3002 and 3200 while updating to iOS 5 which I faced some time back.

First you need to download the iOS 5 IPSW files from the Apple servers. Click the link that corresponds to your iOS5 device - iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 GSM, iPhone 4 CDMA, iPad (original), iPad 2 WiFi, iPad 2 GSM, iPad 2 CDMA. Remember that IPSW files are 700+ MB in size so you should probably use a download manager that can resume broken downloads.

By this way, you are downloading iOS 5 Into Local Hard Disk, So in case if you are updating more than one device and even if you want to update it in future, you don’t want to connect to the internet each time.

Once the firmware file has downloaded, close the iTunes software and also disconnect your iPhone / iPad (iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 GSM, iPhone 4 CDMA, iPad (original), iPad 2 WiFi, iPad 2 GSM, iPad 2 CDMA) from the computer.

Next copy and paste the IPSW file to the following location:

On Windows:
%APPDATA%\Apple Computer\iTunes\iP{one|ad|od} Software Updates

On Mac:
~/Library/iTunes/iP{one|ad|od} Software Updates

Now plug-in your iOS device to the computer using the USB cable, launch iTunes (make sure you run iTunes as Administrator, right click on iTunes and click run as administrator) and click Update to upgrade your device to iOS 5. This time it will directly pick the local .ipsw files and the upgrade should happen without any issues.

You can also upgrade the iOS firmware manually by holding down Shift while pressing the Update but for some reason, this approach always resulted in same 3200 and 3002 errors.

I had to run iTunes as administrator to be able to restore from a downloaded ipsw file, several attempts before that, even hacked hosts file to prevent the system calling home to Apple to verify.

How To Find iPod's Disk Format | Determine iPods Disk Format

iPod, iPod nano, and iPod mini can be restored to work with Macintosh or Microsoft Windows computers.

If configured for a Mac, the iPod will be restored as Mac OS Extended (HFS Plus). If configured for Windows, the iPod will be restored as FAT32.

And this article applies to iPod, iPod mini, iPod nano which will let you find the disk format of your iPod.

Checking your iPod disk format

To determine if your iPod has been restored for Macintosh or Windows, do this:

On your iPod, select Settings > About. If you're using an older iPod with older iPod software (such as iPod Software 1.x), select Settings from the main menu.
Scroll down to the bottom of the screen.

If your iPod disk is configured for Macintosh, the serial number is the last item you'll see listed in the About screen. If the disk is configured for Windows, the last item you'll see is "Format: Windows."

You cannot use an iPod whose disk is configured for Macintosh on a Windows-compatible computer. However, you can restore the iPod disk to use it with a Windows-compatible computer. To do this, see "Steps To Restore iPod To Factory Settings." While a Windows formatted iPod may work on a Mac, Apple supports this configuration only with iPod shuffle.

About the iPod nano disk format

When you connect iPod nano to a Macintosh computer for the first time, you'll see this dialog:

This is because iPod nano comes preformatted for Windows (FAT32 file system). The first time you connect to a Macintosh, iPod nano will "reformat" itself to work with a Mac (HFS+ file system). This only occurs the first time you connect iPod nano to your Mac, and if you've never connected it to another computer.

There are a few situations when iPod nano won't be optimized for Mac OS:

If you connect iPod nano to a Windows PC the very first time you use it and then connect iPod nano to your Mac.
If you open iTunes for the first time before you connect iPod nano for the first time, but you do not agree to the iTunes Software License Agreement.

In both cases, you will not see the "Optimizing" dialog, and iPod nano will not be optimized for Mac OS. If this happens to you, you can optimize iPod nano for Mac OS by simply using iPod Updater to Restore iPod nano on your Mac.

Steps To Restore iPod To Factory Settings

It's important to understand the difference between updating and restoring. Updating simply installs the software that controls iPod and does not affect the songs and files stored on iPod's disk. Restoring erases the iPod's disk and restores iPod to its original factory condition.

Warning: Because restoring erases all the songs and files on iPod, back up any files you've saved on the iPod disk. How to restore iPod

Verify that you have an active Internet connection, because you may need to download new versions of the iTunes and iPod Software.
Download and install the latest version of iTunes if necessary.
Open iTunes. Connect your iPod to your computer using the USB or FireWire cable that came with your iPod.
After a few moments, your iPod will appear in the Source panel in iTunes.
Select your iPod in the Source panel. You will see information about your iPod appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes window.
Click Restore.

If you are using a Mac, you will be asked to enter an administrator’s name and password.
A progress bar will appear on the computer screen, indicating that stage one of the restore process has begun. When this stage is done, iTunes will present one of two messages with instructions specific to the iPod model you are restoring.
- Disconnect iPod and connect it to iPod Power Adapter (typically applies to older iPod models).
- Leave iPod connected to computer to complete restore (typically applies newer iPod models).
During stage two of the restore process, the iPod displays an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remain connected to the computer or iPod power adapter during this stage.
Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see, because the backlight on the iPod display may be off.
After stage two of the restore process is complete, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear. It will ask you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences, as it did when you connected your iPod for the first time.

This works on both PCs and Macs, but these instructions are for PCs. Mac computers work similarly to this.

1. Have the "View Hidden Files and Folders" option enabled. To view them go to my documents and then tools - folder options - View. Then click the "Show hidden files and folders" under the "Hidden files and folders" section. (You will not have to scroll down the list to see it)

2. Plug the iPod into the computer that you wish to (Synchronize) back it up on.

3. Open up a Windows Explorer Window, from the accessories folder of the programs listing.

4. Navigate to the "My Computer" icon.

5. Expand the folder, and find the drive that has the name of your iPod.

6. Expand your iPod's folder, and find the folder: "iPod Control".

7. Expand "iPod Control" and find the folder "Music".

8.Look for a series of folders with strange names.

9. Select all of the files. Do this by going to: Edit - Select All. Alternatively, you may hold the Control key and click all of the folders.

10. Copy all of the folders, by going to Edit - Copy or by right clicking one of the selected folders and clicking copy. This will copy all of the folders.

11.Paste the music in the desired folder by using Edit - Paste.

12. Open each folder, and copy the MP3 files into the desired folder, or you can leave them where they are. The music will have non understandable names, like "EDCI" and "DLXE", 4 letter names are normal.

13. Open the music up in the music player of your choice if you wish. Do this when all of the music has been extracted from the original iPod folders.

Note:

Most music player programs can decode the names into the original names, and artists.
The copying of the music takes some time.
This can be used to copy friend's music.
Get a good MP3-Tagger-Program e.g. mp3tag (freeware) and automatically rename the files if you want to use them on your PC
Do not try and manually rename each song.
Do not mess around with any other file(s) on the iPod
Do not remove any songs from the list
