Galaxy Nexus Vs iPhone 4S | Which one has the upper edge?

Google’s Galaxy Nexus is the latest addition to this year’s hot smartphone line-up, alongside the iPhone 4S. Galaxy Nexus offer plenty of features you won't find on Apple's blockbuster sequel.

But does the Galaxy Nexus stand a chance against Apple’s iPhone 4S, which is currently selling like hot cakes?

This post is just to discuss about the key differences between Galaxy Nexus and Apple iPhone 4s.

The Galaxy Nexus, manufactured by Samsung, embodies Google’s idea of the perfect smartphone, together with the brand-new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich mobile OS.

The first thing you’ll notice on the Galaxy Nexus is the huge, curved 4.65-inch display, which is considerably bigger than the 3.5-inch display on the iPhone 4S.

The Galaxy Nexus display doesn’t skimp on pixel density either; it has a 1280- by-720 pixel resolution, the highest in the comparison. The iPhone display however, still retains the highest pixel density at 330 ppi, a slight lead over the 316 ppi screen of the Galaxy Nexus.

The Galaxy Nexus is also very thin, (8.84 mm on the Nexus), which makes the iPhone 4S look a bit bulky at 9.3 mm. While the iPhone 4S is the most compact given its smaller screen size.

Processor and Memory:

Inside, the Galaxy Nexus, and the iPhone 4S run on the latest dual-core processors, namely 1.2GHz dual-core on the Android side, and 1GHz dual-core on the iPhone 4S. The Android phone also run on 1GB of RAM, while the iPhone 4S features half that amount.

Storage:

As for storage, both Nexus and iPhone 4S come with 16GB of built-in memory, so you have plenty of space for your apps and media.

The Galaxy Nexus and iPhone 4S come in 32GB flavors, too, or even up to 64GB at the high end for the 4S, which doesn’t have a MicroSD card slot for expandable storage.

Multimedia;

In the multimedia department, you won’t run out of options with either of these phones. The iPhone 4S have 8-megapixel cameras at the back that can record full HD 1080p video. The Galaxy Nexus can also record 1080p video, but, surprisingly, Samsung put only a 5-megapixel shooter on Google’s phone, which is less than what we have seen on other phones from the manufacturer, such as the Galaxy SII. All three phones also have video chat cameras on the front.

How To Create Animation Effects On iPhone | Flixel App

Flixel is an app for iOS which lets you do animations and then to share with your friends using iOS devices.

This iPhone app won’t make you snap a lot of photos and then stitch them together in a complex manner to make an animation. All you have to do is to point your iPhone or iPad’s camera in the direction of a moving object, and you will have a fully functional animation, which can be edited and then shared with all your friends and personal network on the app.

Flixel starts off with a display of the app’s feed, showcasing all the best shares made by other app users. The Featured images include animations which have received the most likes and favorites from other users.

You can view the animation by tapping its thumbnail, and in its menu, there are options to share it over Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr or via email. Most animations take some time to load up fully, so give it a few moments to enjoy completely.

Although it is possible to use Flixel without signing up for a new account, guests users can’t share their own animations over the app’s own network.

Creating animations using Flixel is easy. Just tap the central camera button in the bottom bar of the app, and you will be taken to the preview screen. The camera sported by Flixel is pretty simple, with just grid and flash buttons present.

After you have captured the animation, you can edit it with ease. There are many filters present in Flixel, which can be applied with a single tap. Most effects are free, but there are a few paid ones as well, which can be activated via in-app purchases. It is also possible to cut your animations artistically from different areas to give it a whole new view. Once you are done editing the image, you can choose to add a caption to it, along with your current location.

SkyDrive app Available For Windows Phone and iPhone

Microsoft announced the availability of a new SkyDrive app for Windows Phone and iPhone. The SkyDrive application follows a recent overhaul of Microsoft’s SkyDrive cloud storage service. Microsoft introduced HTML5 upload, improved sharing and drag and drop functionality in its SkyDrive web app last month.

The applications are identical in features and provide access to SkyDrive folders. Windows Phone and iPhone users can browse their SkyDrive folders, share links to folders or files, delete files and create folders from within the application. Photos can also be uploaded to SkyDrive from the apps with their original resolution.

Microsoft’s approach follows a number of iOS applications, including Bing, Messenger, OneNote and Xbox LIVE.

The software giant is clearly broadening its array of applications to rival platforms whilst keeping Windows Phone customers happy. We managed to secure an early hands on with the Windows Phone version (see video below) and it’s clear that the app is designed to be a companion to Windows Phone. Word, Excel and other Office documents will open natively from the SkyDrive app into the Office hub of Windows Phone.

One of the best features is being able to store full resolution images from a Windows Phone camera straight into SkyDrive, this functionality is included by default but the image is scaled down.

SkyDrive application highlights include:

  • Browse entire SkyDrive – Users can now see all folders and files (of all types) to allow them to share and manage their data.
  • Share any SkyDrive folder or file – Users can now pick folders or files to share from their mobile. The apps provide a link directly to the content.
  • Manage SkyDrive content – Users can now organize files and folders and create new folders or delete files and folders.

The latest SkyDrive mobile application is available in every country and region where Windows Phone is offered. Also the iPhone version is available in 32 languages.

Why Should I Upgrade To iPhone 4S

Just few days back we were discussing why it is not a good idea to switch to iPhone 4S from iPhone 4. If you have missed that post, I would recommend you to read my post here, Why Not To Upgrade Your iPhone 4 To iPhone 4S.

Now, its time to analyze if it is good to upgrade to iPhone 4S? A lot of people are wondering which iPhone is the right one for them - both people looking to upgrade their own one and people who are just joining the Apple phone party. How much more do you get with the 4S, over the iPhone 4?

Earlier, The 3GS improved on the 3G, but wasn’t a completely new design, that came with the iPhone 4. And now the iPhone 4S improves on the previous model, again without being a complete redesign.

It's a strategy that works, the previous generation of iPhone well proved that. But are the changes enough to justify an upgrade? Some people were underwhelmed when they heard there's no "iPhone 5", while others cheered when they saw Siri and the beefier hardware.

Why Is It Worth To Upgrade To iPhone 4S

Here's the short list of changes that say "Yes, it's worth  to buy iPhone 4S:

  • Dual-core processor and 7x more powerful GPU
  • Siri natural language commands and dictation engine
  • 8MP camera with improved low-light performance and capture speed
  • 1080p video capture with stabilization
  • GSM/CDMA dual-mode device
  • No more death grip thanks to dual antenna design
  • 64GB option
  • Power-efficient Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity
  • Dual Antenna On iPhone 4S

Apple learned its lesson from the iPhone 4 and while the iPhone 4S looks practically the same, it features two antennas to combat the "death grip" issue.

We're not talking about one GSM and one CDMA antenna - yes, the 4S is a dual-mode device that supports both networks, but it features two separate antennas that are connected to both radios.

The phone can intelligently switch between the two antennas as needed (even in the middle of a call), so if one antenna is blocked, the other takes over. This means no death grip, no matter how you hold the iPhone 4.

This will improve reception in areas of spotty coverage, where even the slightest sign of death grip can push reception below the threshold needed to make a call. Whether it will improve reception while not holding the phone at all is another question that will take a while to answer - but user reports have been positive for now.

This isn't an in-depth review of the iPhone 4S - there will be a separate article for that. Here, we focus on the differences between the 4S and the iPhone 4.

As you've undoubtedly heard (and seen) Siri, the personal digital assistant that lives in the iPhone 4S, is really amazing. It listens to your spoken questions and answers back in its own voice.

It's very flexible and you can ask it for information (weather, stocks, points of interest, you name it) and also ask it to perform tasks for you - set an alarm, add a calendar entry, compose a message, put down a note.

Siri is very flexible: Apple even gave it a bit of an attitude, so when you ask it something silly (as you surely will, just for the fun of it), Siri comes back with a clever answer and a grin on its face. The practical value of such jokes is zero, but it really gives the user a sense that they are speaking to something intelligent rather than something that knows some answers by rote.

The End Note:

Of course, there are other software advancements besides Siri, plus services like iCloud, that launch with iOS 5. They aren't exclusive to the iPhone 4S however.

iPhone owners in the US will have to make a few concessions (not many, really) but getting the iPhone 4S is a smart move. For everyone else, it's less clear cut but an upgrade is still encouraged if you can afford it.

Why Not To Upgrade Your iPhone 4 To iPhone 4S

How much more do you get with the 4S, over the iPhone 4? If you're answer less, we're here to help by putting the facts that we know for you to understand.

The strategy that Apple following here is the same that they did for iPhone 3 and iPhone 3GS. The iPhone 3GS improved on the 3G, but wasn’t a completely new design, that came with the iPhone 4. And now the iPhone 4S improves on the previous model, again without being a complete redesign.

It's a strategy that works, the previous generation of iPhone well proved that. But are the changes enough to justify an upgrade? Some people were underwhelmed when they heard there's no "iPhone 5", while others cheered when they saw Siri and the beefier hardware.

Here's the short list that that could potentially discourage you from upgrading to the iPhone 4S:.

  • Same design
  • Same screen too, both in terms of size and resolution
  • The amount of RAM is the same
  • Siri doesn't work too well for people outside the US

Why Siri Wont Help You Much?

Siri is cool, we saw that for ourselves. But it's usefulness is greatly diminished outside the US due to two things - it refuses to search for businesses outside the US and very few languages are supported. Your English needs to be spot on too, accents don't go very well with Siri. Still, for US citizens Siri is all sorts of cool (if you're not shy about talking to your phone that is).

But on the other side, the new iPhone 4S has also have some advantages over the older version. And we will discuss that in my future post, and before that, here is a small glimpse of what I am going to say there.

Why Not To Upgrade Your iPhone To iPhone 4S

iPhone 4S is twice as fast as iPhone 4.

In browsing, it leaves all other smartphones in the dust. There's the occasional tablet that can come close but that's it. In 3D gaming, it breezes past top-end Androids.

The iPhone 4S outperforms the iPhone 4 by a pretty wide margin. When it comes to multithreaded tests, the 4S does actually perform twice as good.

The iPad 2 (which uses the same chipset) scores higher because it seems to run on a higher clock speed. Apple wouldn’t give exact numbers.

We use computers everyday, we don't think about how it all started or how many years and hard work there is behind every program, operating system, and website, that make a computer what it is today.

Computer’s abilities are often overlooked whether it is at the home or the office. The whole computer process, which you could say, started back in the 300 B.C all came together today, and we use it everyday of our lives.

The computer first started with a machine that could calculate math problems known as a calculator to us today, but known as the difference engine to Charles Babbage in 1833. The main purpose of the machine was to calculate astronomical tables.

The machine was never built because the government ignored his ideas. In 1940 an idea of the Analytical machine, which claimed could perform any mathematical calculation. The machine was built but there were too many bugs and defects that made the machine incompatible of doing a lot of mathematics.

Since then it all started, and here is the gallery of a few paradigm shifts of the past. Will Apple's iPad change the face of computing?

ENIAC, 1946

Regarded as the first general purpose electronic computer, the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC) was initially commissioned for the use in World War II, but not completed until one year after the war had ended.

Installed at the University of Pennsylvania, its 40 separate eight-foot-high racks and 18,000 tubes were intended to help calculate ballistic trajectories.

SAGE, 1954

A gigantic computerized air defence system, SAGE (Semi-Automatic Ground Environment) was designed to help the Air Force track radar data in real time.

Equipped with technical advances such as modems and graphical displays, the machine weighed 300 tons and occupied one floor of a concrete blockhouse.

NEAC 2203, 1960

Manufactured by the Nippon Electric Company (NEC), the drum-based machine was one of the earliest transistorized Japanese computers.

It was used for business, scientific and engineering applications.

IBM System/360, 1964

Part of a family of interchangeable computers, the IBM System/360 mainframe was the first to cover a complete range of applications, from small to large, from commercial to scientific. Users were able to enlarge or shrink their setup without having to make headache-inducing software upgrades as well.

Higher-end System/360 models had roles in NASA's Apollo missions as well as air traffic control systems.

CDC 6600, 1964

For a time the fastest machine in the world, Control Data Corporation's 6600 machine was designed by noted computer architect Seymour Cray.

It retained its speed crown until 1969, when Cray designed his next supercomputer.

DEC PDP-8, 1965

The first successful commercial minicomputer, the PDP-8, made by the Digital Equipment Corporation, sold more than 50,000 units upon its release, the most of any computer up to that time.

Years before Apple and Gnu/Linux offered alternatives to the dominant IBM/Microsoft paradigms, DEC proposed its own vision, by encouraging users to educate themselves and take part in the evolution of the line.

Interface Message Processor, 1969

Conceived at the height of the Cold War, when the U.S. government sought a way to keep its network of computers alive in case certain nodes were destroyed in a nuclear attack or other hostile act, the IMP featured the first generation of gateways, which are today known as routers.

Kenbak-1, 1971

Apple I, 1976

Initially conceived by Steve Wozniak (a.k.a. "Woz") as a build-it-yourself kit computer, Apple I was initially rejected by his bosses at Hewlett-Packard. Undeterred, he offered it to Silicon Valley's Homebrew Computer Club and, together with his friend Steve Jobs, managed to sell 50 pre-built models to The Byte Shop in Mountain View, California.

Hewlett-Packard 150, 1983

Deep Blue, 1997

Begun at IBM in the late 80's, the Deep Blue project was an attempt at using parallel processing to solve a difficult problem — namely, beating the best chess player in the world, Garry Kasparov.

iPhone, 2007

The Wi-Fi iPad begins at $499 while the 3G version begins at $629.
