One year after the official release of Office 2010, Office 2010 Service Pack 1is finally available for download. Microsoft has released the SP1 for Office 2010 product and the download links are live at Microsoft Download center.

Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2460049) contains new updates which improve security, performance, and stability. Additionally, the SP is a roll-up of all previously released updates.

Office 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1) brings stability, performance and security enhancements to the Office suite. According to the official Office updates blog, Service Pack 1 includes many interesting changes.

Microsoft is not  going to include a list of every single bug/issue that they fixed. As said above, their Service Pack is a roll-up of all previously released updates. It means that the service pack includes all hotfixes released to date. Both those released publically (ie. Windows update) and those only available on request.

Please note that this is not a slipstreamed installation, it simply chains the updater to the end of the install routine. A slipstream would integrate the SP1 files into the CAB archives so that the files would only be installed once, saving time. This update is only when you have already installed Office 2010 Application in your system.

How To Install Service Pack for Microsoft Office 2010:

If you have Microsoft Office 2010, 32-Bit Edition, do one of the following:

• Use Microsoft Update (recommended). Microsoft Update consolidates updates provided by Windows Update and Office Update into one location and enables you to choose automatic delivery and installation of high-priority updates.
• Install Service Pack for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2460049) 32-bit Edition. To do this, follow these steps:
• Download the .exe file from the above location (32Bit or 64Bit depending upon your Office Edition) and then save the file to your hard disk drive.
• It is recommended that you quit any programs you are running.
• In Windows Explorer, double-click the .exe file that you saved to your hard disk drive, and follow the instructions on the screen.
  The download size of x86 version is 361 MB and x64 version is 439 MB.

When Excel 2007 was introduced, all users were abandoned most habits acquired from previous versions. This was because, Excel 2007 completely revamped user interface called the Ribbon menu system.

Some practical advantages of Excel 2007 were greatly improved management of named variables through the Name Manager, and much improved flexibility in formatting graphs, which now allow (x, y) coordinate labeling and lines of arbitrary weight. Even there were some disadvantages like, the previous version makes more extensive use of multiple cores for the calculation of spreadsheets, however VBA macros are not handled in parallel and XLL addins only are executed in parallel if they are thread-safe and indicate this at the time of registration.

Then when Excel 2010 was introduced along with Office 2010, it bought so many changes with few new features. And here’s a quick overview of the new features in Excel 2010:

• 64-bit version: If your hardware and Windows version supports it, you can install the 64-bit version, which lets you create larger workbooks. You might experience some incompatible macros and add-ins. Specifically, macros that use 32-bit Windows API calls won’t work in 64-bit Excel 2010. In most cases, however, you can modify the code so that the API calls work with both versions of Excel.
• Sparkline charts: Create small in-cell charts to summarize a range of data graphically.
• Slicers: A slicer is a new way to filter and display data in pivot tables.
• New pivot table formatting options: You have more control over the appearance of pivot table reports.
• Office button changes: The big round Office button in Excel 2007 has been replaced by a File button, displayed to the left of the tabs. Clicking it displays Office Backstage, a screen that lets you perform various operations on your workbook. This view essentially replaces the traditional File and Print menus — plus quite a bit more.
• Conditional formatting enhancements: Data bar conditional formatting can display in a solid color, and the bars provide a more accurate display and support negative values.
• Function enhancements: Some of Excel’s worksheet financial and statistical functions have been improved in terms of numerical accuracy. These functions have new names, and the old versions are still available for compatibility.
• Image-editing enhancements: You have much more control over graphic images inserted into a workbook, including the ability to remove non-essential parts from the background of an image.
• Screen capture tool: You can easily capture a window from a different program and insert the image on a worksheet.
• Paste preview: When you copy a range, the Paste command displays various options with a live preview so that you can see how the paste operation will look.
• Ribbon customization: End users can customize the Ribbon by adding new tabs and
  groups. Unfortunately, it’s still not possible to customize the Ribbon using VBA.
• Equation editor: You can create and display (noncalculating) mathematical equations and embed them on a worksheet.
• Faster: Microsoft made some improvements to the calculation engine, and files load a bit faster.
• New security features: Workbooks downloaded from the Internet or from e-mail attachments are opened in Protected View mode. You can designate workbooks as trusted, and they don’t need to reside in special trusted folders.
• Solver: Excel 2010 includes a new version of the Solver add-in.
• Enhancements to VBA: You can now perform operations that used to require old XLM macros directly using VBA macro commands. In addition, macro recording now works for operations such as chart and shape formatting.

• OneNote 2010 SP1 now uses Windows Live Essentials to log on to Windows Live SkyDrive.

• Fixes an issue in which an incorrect Runs.Count value is returned when a PowerPoint 2003 format presentation runs a PowerPoint 2010 object model command.
• Fixes an issue in which audio or video media that was created on a Mac-based computer does not play back on a Windows-based computer.
• Fixes an issue in which the images in an Enhanced Windows Medafile (EMF) file displays incorrectly when you save a slide as an Enhanced Windows Medafile (EMF) file, and then use a high resolution to print it.
• Fixes an issue in which a pen cannot persist through the Slide Show mode when you use the pen as a pointer.
• Fixes an issue that a default language change is not propagated to new slides or to new presentations.
• Fixes an issue in which a linked image is not saved when you insert the linked image in a presentation, and then save the presentation an Open Document Format (ODF) file.

• Word 2010 SP1 includes a dialog box that warns users that the custom XML will be lost when files that use custom XML markups are saved in XML-based file formats.
• Now, certain fields are available when you use the APA 6th and MLA 7th edition styles in the Bibliography feature.
• Fixes an issue in which users receive the following error message when opening a Word 2010 document.

  The file <file name> cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents.
  The name in the end tag of the element must match the element type in the start tag.

Or, the chart may be corrupt. This issue occurs because Word uses the printer information to display the chart. Word 2010 SP1 adds an OleIgnorePrintPict registry value to 1 to ignore the printer information.
• Fixes an issue in which a chart resizes fully when you use yellow resizing handles to change a shape inside the chart.
• Fixes a rendering problem that occurs when you insert a graphic into a Word document, and then save the document as a HTML file.
• Fixes an issue in which the whole Word group is flipped when you try to flip a child share inside a Word group by using the Word object model.
• Fixes an issue in which the whole Word group is scaled when the ScaleHeight and ScaleWidth command use the Word object model to scale the height or scale the width of a child shape inside a Word group.

If you are still running Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista SP1, its time to upgrade your PCs. As support for Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) ended on July 12, 2011 and support for Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2) ended on July 13, 2010. If you're running one of these versions after support ends, you won't get security updates for Windows.

When a product reaches the end of support, it no longer receives security updates which can help protect it from malicious software as well as other software updates which can help improve the reliability of Windows.

End of support refers to the date when Microsoft no longer provides automatic fixes, updates, or online technical assistance. This is the time to make sure you have the latest available service pack installed. Without Microsoft support, you will no longer receive security updates that can help protect your PC from harmful viruses, spyware, and other malicious software that can steal your personal information. Lifecycle policy if I purchase a PC with Windows already installed:

When Microsoft launches a new version of Windows, we will continue to allow OEMs to sell PCs pre-installed with the previous version for up to two years after the launch date of the new version. Certain OEM versions of Windows products include Downgrade Rights (as outlined within the software license terms). Downgrade Rights make it possible to use a previous version of Windows instead of the licensed software preinstalled on a new PC.

We will continue to allow retailers to sell the previous version of Windows for a year after the launch date of the new version.

This article will let you fix to slow performance of Windows System after the Installation of Service Pack 1.

One of my fried has mailed me that his Windows 7 (HP dv6-1253cl) Pc started to perform too slow once he installed Windows 7 Service Pack 1 from Microsoft. And all his programs in his Windows 7 machine takes longer to start up, compared to the day before installing Windows 7 Service Pack.

But does Windows 7 Service Pack slows down the PC?  Actually, Windows 7 Service pack and other Windows Updates are released to improve the performance, reliability and security of the system.

If your system is slowing down means, there could be several causes why you are experiencing performance issue on your computer.

If you have installed any additional software after the installation of Windows 7 Service Pack 1, that can also be a problem, or there can be some conflict between the drivers and may be even with other software's that are already installed.

Well, do not try uninstalling the Service Pack 1, doing that will not remove all the updates related to Service Pack 1. Tons of updates wont be removed.

You may need to perform a System Restore to completely get back to the situation where Service Pack has not been installed. And to do so,

• 1. Type “System Restore” on start menu search.

• 2. right click on the result “System Restore” and click “Run as Administrator”
• 3. Give Yes if any pop up window appears. If you are not an Administrator, you will be asked to enter the administration user name and password.
• 4. There you will get a Windows as the below screen shot and you have to choose the date prior to installing Service Pack 1.

• 5. Follow the on screen instruction.
• 6. Restart Your System.

However, the above step will take you to the positon before installing Service Pack 1 for Windows 7. However, we cant be sure that the same problem wont arrise when you install the Windows Update Again. So, the best idea is to troubleshoot the exact problem. And To troubleshoot and solve this issue try the following steps:

Method 1: Run the performance troubleshooter and then check

Method 2:  If a Windows Resource Protection (WRP) file is missing or is corrupted, Windows may not behave as expected.Run System File Checker (SFC) scan to fix any corrupt system files. To do this, follow the steps mentioned in the link below:

Method 3: Put the computer in clean boot and then check to see if the issue persists

Follow  Step 1 in the link below,

If everything works fine after a clean boot, you can infer that some third party services are causing the problem.

Proceed with the remaining steps to pin-point out the third party service.

After you figure out the problem causing program, you may have to update or install a higher version of the program, if you seldom use that software you can consider uninstalling it.

Remember to put the computer back to normal startup follow   step 7 in the link.

If this method has not helped you, then you can go for a system restore, and check if you have all the latest driver for all your hardware and try to install the Service Pack in a few days time.
