How To Allocate Processor Resource To The Virtual PC

It was seriouly my question for long long time. And then I realised that it is not possible as of now. Yes, we can't Allocate Processor Resource To The Virtual PC. But, we can allocate more ram to the virtual PC, but not more cpu power.

There is no workaround till date.  Windows 7 virtual machines are limited to using a single processor even if the physical hardware has more than one physical processor. It is by design.

It would be nice to allocate more processor power to a Virtual XP Machine to match the performance characteristics of a dual core PC running WinXP. Any chance that Microsoft will allow affinity settings? Software engineers still write lot of software in Windows XP using National Instruments LabVIEW.

I has not fully embraced the Windows 7 64 bit environment with their data acquisition hardware.

From my experience: Use VirtualBox or VMWare Player. Both are faster and better compared to VirtualPC.

Get The Most From 64-Bit Computing

Since it was introduced for Windows operating systems, 64-bit computing has changed substantially. Not only do computers running 64-bit versions of Windows perform better and run faster than their 32-bit counterparts, they are also more scalable because they can process more data per clock cycle, address more memory, and perform numeric calculations faster.

And do you know that Windows 7 supports two different 64-bit architectures:

  • x64: This architecture is based on 64-bit extensions to the x86 instruction set, which is implemented in AMD Opteron (AMD64) processors, Intel Xeon processors with 64-bit extension technology, and other processors. This architecture offers native 32-bit processing and 64-bit extension processing, allowing simultaneous 32-bit and 64-bit computing.
  • ia64: This architecture is based on the Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing (EPIC) processor architecture, which is implemented in Intel Itanium (IA64) processors and other processors. This architecture offers native 64-bit processing, allowing 64-bit applications to achieve optimal performance.

Sixty-four-bit computing is designed for performing operations that are memory intensive and that require extensive numeric calculations. With 64-bit processing, applications can load large data sets entirely into physical memory (that is, RAM), which reduces the need to page to disk and increases performance substantially.

The EPIC instruction set enables Itanium-based processors to perform up to 20 operations simultaneously.

Currently, the prevalent firmware interfaces are:

  • ■ Basic input/output system (BIOS)
  • ■ Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI)
  • ■ Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI)

Itanium-based computers differ in many fundamental ways from computers based on the x86 and x64 specifications. While Itanium-based computers use EFI and the GUID partition table (GPT) disk type, computers based on x86 use BIOS and the master boot record (MBR) disk type.

Computers based on x64 use UEFI wrapped around BIOS or EFI. This means that there are differences in the way you manage computers with these architectures, particularly when it comes to setup and disk configuration.

However, with the increasing acceptance and use of UEFI and the ability of Windows 7 to use both MBR and GPT disks regardless of firmware type, the underlying chip architecture won’t necessarily determine what firmware type and disk type a computer uses. This decision is in the hands of the hardware manufacturer.

Generally, BIOS-based computers use MBr for booting or for data disks and Gpt only for data disks. eFI-based computers can have both Gpt and MBr disks, but you must have at least one Gpt disk that contains the eFI system partition (eSp) and a primary partition or simple volume that contains the operating system for booting.

In most cases, 64-bit hardware is compatible with 32-bit applications; however, 32-bit applications perform better on 32-bit hardware. Windows 64-bit editions support both 64-bit and 32-bit applications using the Windows on Windows 64 (WOW64) x86 emulation layer. The WOW64 subsystem isolates 32-bit applications from 64-bit applications. This prevents fi le system and registry problems.

The operating system provides interoperability across the 32-bit/64-bit boundary for the Component Object Model (COM) and for basic operations such as cutting, copying, and pasting using the Clipboard. However, 32-bit processes cannot load 64-bit dynamic-link libraries (DLLs), and 64-bit processes cannot load 32-bit DLLs.

In the shift to 64-bit computing, you may want to track which computers in the enterprise support 64-bit operating systems, which computers are already running 64-bit operating systems, or both. With Windows PowerShell you can:

  • Determine whether a computer has a 64-bit operating system installed by using the OSArchitecture property of the Win32_OperatingSystem object.

  • Determine whether a computer supports a 64-bit operating system by using the Name and Description properties of the Win32_Processor object.

Here, the first sample output tells you the computer is running a 32-bit version of Windows. The second sample output tells you the computer has an x64 processor.

As a result, you know the computer can be upgraded to a 64-bit version of Windows 7. Rather than check each computer individually, you can create a script to do the work for you.

LG Optimus Way Ahead Of Other Mobile Brands

The LG Optimus 2X is the world's first Tegra-2 phone which is a dual-core processor that will run Android 2.2 (and 2.3 upon upgrade) at lightning speeds.

First Dual-Core Phone Available To The Public: LG Optimus 2X indeed is the world’s first dual-core smartphone (both announced and released). This achievement was acknowledged by the Guinness World Records.

The phone was rushed a bit and was released with Android 2.2 instead of later with Android 2.3. When compared to the other dual code phones, the Optimus 2X started looking somewhat unfinished and incomplete. Various bugs, and excessive battery drainage and the lack of Android 2.3 Gingerbread are somewhat of deal breakers.

LG Optimus Way Ahead Of Other Mobile Brands

More power to LG for this, but I think back when Samsung came out with the Omnia HD being the first phone capable of HD recording and playback it was a much bigger stand point in the mobile world.

My question on Optimus 2x as a gaming phone got completely overshadowed as a result.

Symbian (at its current state atleast) wont be able to fully utilize 1ghz CPUs. It is meant to be slow yet resource efficient. It's just living undead.

Nokia lost momentum when the touchscreen revolution began. They invest way more on research and development and it still takes them 2 years to make a good touch based web browser.

2x is more powerful for a gamer who'd also do other stuff with it and seems easier to handle.

Nokia is much popular but technically they lack behind. Popularity is one thing, technical advancement is another. For the average geek like me, the latter holds more importance. Nokia is struggling to catch up on the Smart Phone market. Right now, Nokia is replacing their previous board members with newer ones. Also, they are focusing on cheaper S^3 phones as well as WP7 phones. They are struggling polishing MeeGO OS as they are only planning on releasing 1 MeeGO model this year.

Fact File: The 5800 XpressMusic was released on April 27, 2008 and it sold over 8 million units by November 2009. It took Nokia 19 months to sell that much while the Samsung Galaxy S I9000 was released in June 2010 and sold 10 million units by January 2011 and Apple sold 18 million iPhones last quarter alone. That's 18 million iPhones in just 3 months.

Nokia N8 Suffers From Purple Screen Defect:

Nokia may be popular but that's because people living in populous nations thinks Nokia is still the best. Nokia has gone down the hill and Nokia can't even get the purple screen defect fixed. That's how bad Nokia has come down when it comes to quality. Almost all Nokia N8 is affected by this defect. They admitted the defect on the N8 but they don't have a fix for it. Check it out. It's pathetic.

Its also bad to underestimate NOKIA. Because when all leading brand have touch screen phone in their bag then Nokia is the last one to introduce touch screen phones and when it launch touch phones it is loved and successful to some extend. And when Samsung(Pixon 12) and Sony Erikssonz (satio) have 12mp Xenon flash camera phones in their bag then again Nokia is the last one to introduce 12 MP camera phone with lots of new features in Nokia N8.

Also For example, Sony Ericsson is very poor on battery when compared to Nokia. what’s d essence of having a phone wit no good charge span. I hope Sony Ericsson will improve on that because that’s what suffering from my w810i, with 3 batteries, it still doesn’t last 24hrs. As we have plenty of knowledge working with so far 32 bit architecture, now its time to learn the advantages and the dis advantages of 64 bit architecture.

When deciding to move up to a 64-bit operating system, you should first consider what 64-bit gets you. Knowing what software runs on 64-bit should influence your decision; you will see no advantage if you are running 32-bit software on a 64-bit OS.

  • More security: The 64-bit versions of Windows Vista and 7 contain Kernel Patch Protection which prevents malicious programs from changing the Windows kernel. Overall, the 64-bit edition is more secure than its 32-bit counterpart.
Dis Advantages Of 64 Bit Windows Architecture: 
  • Possible driver issues: 32-bit drivers are not supported; hardware manufacturers have to provide special 64-bit versions. However, this is not as much of an issue anymore, as nearly all of the hardware that has been released over the past three years has shipped with drivers right out of the box. If not, these drivers will come via Windows Updates or download from the manufacturers support Web sites.  
  • Higher memory consumption: All memory addresses are now 64 bits long instead of 32 bits. This results in a larger memory footprint for Windows and applications. We’ve seen 64-bit versions of Windows Vista and 7 taking up 200-350 Mega byte more RAM than 32-bit versions. If you have at least 3 Giga byte of main memory, this is not an issue, but on a low-end machine (1-2 GB), this causes more access to the hard disk and potentially slows down the machine.
