Windows 7 Enterprise having this problem when installing printers. And the error message that Windows gives is, "Windows cannot connect to the printer." Details: "Operation failed with error 0x0000007e".

What is the solution for this error, if we do not want to have the computers with local port definitions.

If you are an Windows administrator, try the following script: "rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /in /q /n \\myserver\myprinter"

I wanted to post my findings for people searching this.

My Environment:

Server: Windows Server 2008 32 bit

Printers: HP LJ 4100, HP LJ 4600

Driver: HP Universal Print Driver

Clients: Mixture of W7 x86 and x32

Symptoms: 32 bit clients have no issue adding printers, 64 bit clients are unable to add printers and receive an error of "Cannot Connect to Printer" with an error code of 0x0000007e.

My resolution:

Open 2 command prompts on the server and do a dir on c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpcpn*.dll in one window and a dir on c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\x64\3\hpcpn*.dll in another window.

Chances are, you will not have the same file in both directories, which is what windows wants. I've tried renaming and I've tried copying the other dll file, these methods don't work. You can muck with installing new drivers all day to get these files to align, or you can do the following:

When installing for a 64 bit client:

Take note of the three digit number at the end of that dll file in the x64\3 directory

Open regedit and browse to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Print\Printers\<Printer Name>\CopyFiles\BIDI. Change the value of the "Module" key to end with the dll that we found in the \x64\3 directory

When installing for a 32 bit client:

Take note of the three digit number at the end of that dll file in the w32x86\3 directory

Open regedit and browse to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Print\Printers\<Printer Name>\CopyFiles\BIDI. Change the value of the "Module" key to end with the dll that we found in the \w32x86\3 directory

I spent a long time working this issue with HP and Canon and what ended up solving the 0x0000007e error on the Win 7 x64 clients using a Windows 2008 print server:

• Logon to the Windows 7 client machine
• Click on the Start button
• Click on Devices and Printers
• Click and highlight any printer already installed on the local machine. (This should allow you to see the “Print Server Properties” button right underneath the address bar at the top of the page.
• Click on Print Server Properties button
• Click on the Drivers Tab
• Highlight and remove every single driver (Make sure you are on the client machine NOT THE SERVER!!)
• Click OK and then Close the Printer Page.
• Go to Start /Run / and type in services.msc
• Find the print spooler service
• Stop the print spooler for at least 10 seconds
• Restart the print spooler service
• Go back to the print server and try and reinstall the printer

It works for you, that is fine.

In addition, according to Microsoft database, if the driver has color profiles, the add printer wizard will fail. It is a known bug in Windows 7.

I found a hotfix on Microsoft page which was supposed to solve this issue.

Unless a printer is added to a system and the printer spooler correctly recognizes the printer, it will not be able to carry out the printing jobs. This happens when other printers, before the actual printer, is installed in the system. You could fix the issue by starting the computer in the safe mode. When you power on the system, you need to move to the ‘Windows advanced option’ by pressing the ‘F8’ key and then selecting the safe mode option from there. By doing that you would be able to delete previously installed printer files.

Possible Error Message In Windows 7: Error 1053, printer spooler-service does not work. And if your Printer is not compatible with Windows 7, Changing the print services to automatic and rebooting will not work. You can also try to restarting the print spooler by restarting it from the services.

Printer spooler errors

There are chances that printer spooler in the system would show errors. This is due to very high CPU use. The documents in the queue would not print or delete. This would lead to lock ups, slow system performance, and disk space errors etc. The printing process would thus fail.

You could fix the issue by downloading the printer spooler repair tool, which is called as ‘PC Health Advisor’. You might also need to save the software file in your system and run the software for fixing the printer spooler errors.

The print spooler stops after trying to print a PDF file and it will not restart.  The only way that we have been able to print again is to do a System Recovery.  When you try to print a PDF file again the print spooler does the same thing and sometimes shows some error message or any other error codes.If such problem arises

Try the steps below and check:

Step 1:

When the print spooler service stops, try restarting it and check if it helps. If you have already tried the steps then ignore Step 1.

• Click Start and then type "services" (without quotes) in the Start Search box.
• In the results area, right-click services, and then click “Run as administrator”.
  You will be prompted to type the password for an administrator account. Click Continue if you are the administrator or type the administrator password. Then, click Continue.
• In Services Window locate the service “Print Spooler” and double click on it.
• Make sure that the Startup type is set to “Automatic” and the Service status is “Started”.

Step 2:

Try running the printer troubleshooter and check if it helps.

Open the Printer troubleshooter

• If your computer is having problems printing, try using the Printer troubleshooter to fix the problem. It makes sure that a printer is connected to your computer, and it checks for common issues such as whether the printer has enough paper and toner to complete printing your document.
• Open the Printer troubleshooter by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Under Hardware and Sound, click Use a printer.

Step 3:

Try the following Microsoft Fixit and check if it helps.

Fix printing problems by resetting the print spooler (Applicable to Windows 7)

• Check hardware: Many printing problems are caused by hardware that isn't set up property. Here's some information about how to plug cables in to the correct locations and make sure the printer has power.

• Check if the cables are connected properly:Check to make sure that the printer's electrical cord is plugged in to the electrical outlet, and that the printer cable is properly connected from the printer to the computer.

• Check the power:Check to ensure that the printer's power switch is turned on, or if you're printing to a shared printer or a printer on a network, make sure that all necessary computers, routers, and printers are turned on. If your printer or other equipment is plugged in to a surge protector or a backup power supply, make sure that hardware is plugged in and turned on as well.

  

• Use a troubleshooter:A troubleshooter is an automated tool that can find and automatically fix some problems with your computer. Printing troubleshooters can fix problems with installing a printer, connecting to a printer, and errors with the print spooler—software that temporarily stores print jobs on the computer's hard disk.

• In the File Download dialog box, click Run, and then follow the steps in the wizard.

• Update drivers: Most printers require driver software to work properly. Outdated, incompatible, or corrupted printer drivers can disrupt communication between the computer and the printer. If you recently upgraded from one version of Windows to another, it's possible that the current printer driver is for the previous version of Windows. If you've had recent power outages, viruses, or other computer problems, it's possible that the drivers have become corrupted. Downloading and installing the latest driver for your printer can resolve these types of problems.

Here are three ways to find and install a driver:

• Use Windows Update. You might need to set Windows Update to automatically download and install recommended updates.

• Install software from the printer manufacturer. For example, if your printer came with a disc, that disc might contain software that installs a driver for the printer.

• Download and install the driver yourself. You can search for a driver on the manufacturer's website. Try this if Windows Update can't find a driver for your printer, and the printer didn't come with software that installs a driver.
