Steps To Reset All User Permissions To Default

This article will explain how to change the user permission on Windows (Vista and Windows 7) to its default settings.

Use this method only if you have accidentally changed some user permission on your Windows machine . I can't change the permissions back because it tells me that I do not have access to certain folders.

It is very important that if you have created System Restore points try to restore your system back to previous dates on which your system worked without the above mentioned problem.

To reset system permissions, follow the steps:

  • You will need to run ‘Subinacl Tool’ to reset the permission to normal.  Download subinacl.msi from the following link, and save it on the desktop.

  • On the desktop, double-click subinacl.msi to install the tool.
  • Select C:\Windows\System32 as the destination folder.

This step assumes that Windows is installed in C:\Windows. If Windows is installed elsewhere, select the appropriate path to .\System32.

  • Open Notepad.
  • Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad window.

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f

  • In Notepad click File, Save As, and then type: reset.cmd
  • In Notepad click Save as type, and then select All Files (*.*).

Steps To Reset All User Permissions To Default

  • Save the reset.cmd file to your desktop, and close Notepad.
  • Double-click the reset.cmd file to reset the Windows Update permissions. If this gives you any error message, then right click on reset.cmd and choose “Run As Administrator” as shown in the below screen shot. And if you are asked with any question, give Yes to continue.

Steps To Reset All User Permissions To Default 2

This step may take several minutes, so please be patient. When the permissions have been reset, you will be prompted with "Finished, press any key to continue."

  • Press any key to complete the installation.

Check if you have the right permissions to all the folders for all users.

This works for Windows 7 as well as Vista. How do I restore security settings to the default settings?

Fix Error Your PC’s CPU isn’t compatible with Windows 8

It is clear that you did a try to Install Windows 8 and got stuck with the error - Your PC's CPU isn't compatible with Windows 8? Learn the causes of this Windows 8 RP installation error and the solution to this problem.

Windows 8 Release Preview was just announced by Microsoft and a lot of active Windows users have already started using it. If you have not installed Windows 8 RP yet, try to download Windows 8 Release Preview from Microsoft Windows 8 website.

If you are running an older version of hardware, luckily you will land in a error message that "Your PC's CPU isn't compatible with Windows 8" while trying to install Windows 8.

Error details: When running the Windows 8 upgrade assistant, the following error is displayed:

  • Your PC's CPU isn't compatible with Windows 8
  • If you want to install Windows 8, you may have to upgrade some of the hardware in this computer.

This error happens when upgrading to Windows 8 on some old computers which has a non compatible CPU. Even though Windows 8 Release Preview System Requirements does not mention anything specifically about these, it has been clarified that your CPU must support the following features:

If you like to install Windows 8 Release Preview on your computer, make sure your CPU supports the following features:

  • Physical Address Extension (PAE)
  • NX
  • SSE2.

Most of the new CPUs have these features enabled by default. If you receive the error "Your PC's CPU isn't compatible with Windows 8", that indicates you may not have these features enabled or supported in your CPU.

Another potential reason for the Windows 8 release preview installation error while using virtualization software is, you may not have PAE or PAE-NX enabled. Check out the configuration settings for your virtualization software to find the PAE option and enable it before you proceed with Windows 8 RP installation.

Solution for the error "Your PC's CPU isn't compatible with Windows 8"

Most people have reported that the error went away when they enabled XD in their BIOS setup. If you haven't tried enabling XD in your BIOS, try it now and see if it resolve your Windows 8 RP installation error.

To enable NX bit flag, follow the steps below:

  • 1. Restart your computer
  • 2. Press the system key to open BIOS
  • 3. Go to security tab
  • 4. Enable the NX/XD bit flag to ON
  • 5. Save BIOS settings and start computer.

Another Workaround for "Your PC's CPU isn't compatible with Windows 8" error:

If you are unable to find and enable the NX bit, then you may try this work around suggested by Microsoft. This work around will work in most cases but could fail with a blue screen in case of old CPUs that has no NX capability at all.

After downloading the .ISO image for Windows 8, make a bootable DVD or bootable flash drive. Then boot from the bootable device and start the installation from the media.

Microsoft suggests this work around may work out because when you boot from the media, the is installer uses a different setup program found in the root of the bootable media. This setup program used by the bootable media does not do the NX check on the CPU, instead, it tries to activate the NX bit by itself, provided your CPU supports the NX bit.

If you get the Windows 8 Release Preview installation error and suspect that you do not have the NX feature enabled, go to your BIOS settings. To go to the BIOS settings, you will need to reboot your system and press some special keys while booting. The key to get the BIOS setup is different for each computer and is set by the manufacturer. Refer to your documentation to figure out how to get to the BIOS.

Look for the NX option in your BIOS setup under the security settings. If it is currently disabled, Enable it and start the computer. Try to install Windows 8 Release Preview again. Hopefully, you will not get the error Your PC's CPU isn't compatible with Windows 8 anymore.

If you cannot locate the NX settings in your BIOS, that may indicate you do not have that option and probably you have a very old BIOS version. In that case, you will need to contact the manufacturer to get the updated version of BIOS program to get NX setup option. Some old CPUs may not even support that option and that would make it incompatible with Windows 8 release preview.

Fix Error 0X000000ED Unmountable Boot Volume Blue Screen Error

Fix Error: 0X000000ED UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME Error: When booting up to Win XP you may get a error that reads "Unmountable Boot Volume". The cause for the same may be any of the following.

1.The file system is damaged and cannot be mounted.

2.You use a standard 40-wire connector cable to connect the UDMA drive to the controller instead of the required 80-wire, 40-pin cable.

3.The basic input/output system (BIOS) settings are configured to force the faster UDMA modes.

How To Fix:

If it be the connector cable problem then replace the 40-wire cable with an 80-wire UDMA cable.

If it's a BIOS settings problem then  load the 'Fail-Safe' default settings, and then reactivate the most frequently used options such as USB Support.

If it's a damaged file system case then:-

1.Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.

Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted.

2.When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.

3.If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console.

4.When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.

5.At the command prompt, type chkdsk /r , and then press ENTER.

6.At the command prompt, type exit , and then press ENTER to restart your computer.

This takes a bit longer, but the system should boot back into Windows.

Error 80070005 When Using Windows Update | How To Fix

The following post will help you fix Error 80070005 when updating Windows Operating System.

First be sure the user account from which you are trying to update is having Administrator Rights. If not, try from an admin account.

As this behaviour occurs if some registry permissions have been restricted, try the following to reset permission.

    Reset AU permission

Remember to use an elevated command prompt if UAC is enabled!

    • Type in cmd in the Start menu

    • Right-click the cmd.exe element that shows up

    • Select Run as Administrator

    • Answer Yes at the UAC prompt

    • Copy the following command, and Paste in the command prompt and Press Enter.

    Sc sdset wuauserv D:(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)

      • You will receive a "Success" message.

      • Type "Exit" to close the command prompt.

      • Try Windows Update again.

Now try Update to see if the issue has been resolved.

I suggest rebooting between issuing the commands and trying Windows Update. It might not be needed, but it certainly won't hurt.

Reset the registry permissions to the default settings:

          • Click Start, type: "%windir%\help" and press Enter to open the Help folder.

          • Click Start, type: "%windir%\system32" and press Enter to open the System32 folder.

          • Click Start, type the following command and then press ENTER

                secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose

I believe all versions of Windows 7 come with SecEdit.exe already available in C:\Windows\system32\ , so there should be no need to fetch it from anywhere.

You will receive a "Task is completed" message, and a warning message that something could not be done. You can safely ignore this message.

Note: The command is complicated and I suggest you copy and paste the above command into the Run box. After repairing the local security database, let's try windows update again.

Windows Cannot Read The ProductKey Setting From The Unattend answer file | Solution

Almost every one will face this issue when installing Windows 8 on Virtual machines. This is what happened to me while installing Windows 8 Developer Preview on VMware Workstation 8 .0 build 471780.

I have created New Virtual Machine for Windows 8, but while installing Windows 8 it gives me "Vmware Workstation 8 Windows Cannot Read the <ProductKey> settings from the unattend answer file" error. And Windows 8 virtual machine keeps on rebooting...In VMware Workstation 8.0 "Windows 8" Version is a not available under.

Error Message, "Windows cannot read the <ProductKey> setting from the unattend answer file."

Windows Cannot Read The ProductKey Setting from the Unattend answer file

            Solution:

Solution is so simple, remove or Disconnect "Floppy" from your Windows Virtual Machine. Because, what happens actually is the autoinst.flp file contains the ProductKey. And  autoinst.flp is mounted when you start the Virtual Machine VMware.

Right click on the floppy icon on the right bottom corner on the VMware, and click on settings.

ProductKey setting from the unattend answer file

Un tick, Connected and Connect at Power On under Device status and click Ok.

Windows cannot read the ProductKey setting from the unattend answer

Now you can install Windows 8 without any issues. And by any chance if Windows 8 installation ask you to type a product key, just key in this Product Key: DNJXJ-7XBW8-2378T-X22TX-BKG7J

            Enjoy!!

Alternatively, you can also remove the floppy completely from the Virtual machine, just follow these steps.

If you are Windows 8 Virtual Machine is running, power off Windows 8 Virtual Machine & Go to Virtual Machine settings & remove the Floppy.

Windows ProductKey Setting from the Unattend answer file.

Hyper-V does not enable floppy drives by default, and MDT does not use the floppy drive at all.

            Product Key: DNJXJ-7XBW8-2378T-X22TX-BKG7J
