Google To Shutdown Its Operation In China ? | Google May Pull Out Of China Over Censorship

Google Inc said it is no longer willing to continue censoring Internet search results in China, and that it may have to shut down the google.cn website and its offices in the country.
On News: Google said on Tuesday that it had detected "highly sophisticated" cyber-attacks in mid-December on the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists, and that at least 20 other large companies from a wide range of businesses have also been similarly targeted.

U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton will announce a technology policy next week to help citizens in other countries gain access to an uncensored Internet, Clinton's senior advisor for innovation Alec Ross told Reuters separately.

Shares of Google fell 1.9 percent to $579.50 in after-hours trading. Shares of Chinese Internet search company Baidu Inc, Google's main competitor in China, rose 5 percent to $406.00.

COMMENTARY
SANDEEP AGGARWAL, ANALYST, COLLINS STEWART
"Google has billions of records of people doing search and email, and in fact stores that information for longer duration than other companies."

"China is in our view one of the most attractive consumer Internet markets. We think it is generating $200 million in annual revenue from China. But this kind of attack they (Google) cannot afford to have as a global player. That's why I think they're evaluating whether they should basically withdraw from the country."

"What makes Google the largest search engine and one of the leading Internet companies is that they care about users' privacy and if that privacy comes under challenge it may impact their global business."

"They obviously did not appreciate the attack...we should not take the Google threat lightly."

STEPHEN JU, ANALYST, RBC CAPITAL MARKETS
"At first flush it feels like more of a positive for Baidu than a negative for Google. On a financial basis, probably doesn't effect Google very much, it's not going to be a very big needle mover for them."

"This is a complete 180 turnaround (for Google).

"Just about every earnings call recently has been that they are focused on the long-term growth opportunities for China and that they are committed."

"The underlying implication is I guess some sort of government authorities trying to conduct attacks on Google itself in order to gain this information."

"I guess the underhanded implication here is that the government is somehow responsible for conducting this cyber-attack and I guess they feel they cannot operate in that kind of an environment."

"There's only one eventuality here. If they (Google) want to allow unfiltered search results, they're going to get banned."

"I'm sure there's going to be skeptics out there who really question whether this is moral high ground driven. They were a minority player in China. So they might have felt that the government was taking steps to corral their share."

TIM GHRISKEY, CHIEF INVESTMENT OFFICER, SOLARIS ASSET MANAGEMENT, WHICH MANAGES ABOUT $2 BILLION

"Clearly not good news for Google and clearly not good news for consumers. You've got to think that eventually Google figures out a way to deal with this. If they do have to shut down their Chinese operations, that they would be able to reinstate them. Hopefully soon. I can't imagine that this would be permanent."

"China is a great growth engine for every business. It is a great opportunity for Google as well. You've got to think that there is some way the industry can figure out how to deal with hackers. This has been a problem on and off for lots of other companies. and a major frustration for users."

TRIP CHOWDHRY, ANALYST, GLOBAL EQUITIES RESEARCH
"It will hurt their profits. They get 8 to 10 percent of their revenues from China."

"If they walk, they will eventually be invited back into China, because the Chinese people will request that. Openness always wins, but it will take some time."

SHARON HOM, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, HUMAN RIGHTS IN CHINA, A NON-PROFIT ADVOCACY GROUP BASED IN NEW YORK

"It's a wakeup call for the international community about the risks of doing business in China. The tendency has been for companies to keep their eye just on the benefits of doing business. But the risks are real -- The risks are to our intellectual property. The risks are to our values."

REP. ANNA ESHOO, A CALIFORNIA DEMOCRAT, SERVES ON HOUSE ENERGY AND COMMERCE COMMITTEE AND ITS SUBCOMMITTEE ON

COMMUNICATIONS, TECHNOLOGY, AND THE INTERNET
"I'm deeply disturbed that yet another wave of attacks is coming from China. This raises serious national security concerns. I commend Google for coming forward with information about this attack and for cooperating with law enforcement officials to investigate the origin and nature it. It is important that companies continue to be transparent and open about cyber threats."

"For far too long, cyber attackers have hidden in the shadows. These kind of attacks are unacceptable and undermine confidence in the global economy. I urge other companies possessing such information to come forward to help the government identify the source of these attacks, so that the criminals can be held accountable for their actions."

Michael Jackson Memorial Service Affects Overall Internet Performance

The world was watching. Millions stream Michael Jackson memorial service but does  the   memorial tribute Slowed  Overall Internet Performance?... For the most part, yes.
A huge online audience, many watching from PCs at work where TV wasn't available, streamed the event live. That taxed the Internet's overall performance and slowed some sites, according to Keynote Systems, a website monitoring firm.

The ripples were felt nationwide. It took Talia Andrews, a public relations representative in New York, up to a minute to change Web pages. "It shows how an event can really reshape the way we use the Internet."
Millions of streams burdened the Internet as the four major TV networks, cable news outlets and social-networking services provided live coverage.
Like other major news operations, CNN.com added live-video streaming capacity. It drew 781,000 concurrent live streams at its peak, based on internal data.
During the presidential inauguration, CNN set a single-day record as the Internet's largest live-video event, with 1.3 million concurrent live streams.
MSNBC.com on Tuesday drew 510,000 concurrent live streams at its peak.
While comments about Jackson seemed to dominate Twitter, Facebook users posted 800,000 status updates on the event. By comparison, there were 1.8 million updates with "Obama" during the inauguration.

The social network, which teamed with ABC News, CNN, E Online and MTV to offer live streams, says its Michael Jackson page hit nearly 7 million fans, possibly making it the largest following of anyone on the Web.

Overview Of Bandra-Worli Sea Link | India's First 8-Lane Sea Bridge

The Rs.1,600 crore (Rs.16 billion), 5.6-km Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL), India's first open 8-lane, cable-supported sea bridge to reduce traffic congestion in this metro was  inaugurated by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on 30th June 2009.

In construction for over 10 years, the new link between the southern island city and the northwest suburbs to be an alternative to the existing Mahim Causeway.

Earlier, a daily traffic volume of over 1.4 million vehicles causes massive traffic snarls, especially during the morning-evening peak hours.

Also in the past the distance of 8 km between Bandra and Worli currently takes 60-90 minutes to cover during the morning-evening peak hours.
After BWSL becomes operational , this travel time has been reduce to barely six-eight minutes. It is also entail savings in vehicular operating costs (VOC) of over Rs.1 billion a year.

The chief attraction of the magnificent structure would be the two cable-stayed bridges, one 500 metres long (northern side) and another 350 metres long (southern side), for the passage of fishing boats.
The bridge rests on two towers, each 126 metres tall or equivalent to a 43-storeyed building.

Maharashtra State Roads Development Corporation (MSRDC) has plans to provide a viewers' gallery at the top of the towers which would offer a bird's eye glimpse of the entire city.

There is a modern, automated, 16-lane toll plaza at the southern end, and the bridge has been equipped with sophisticated security and monitoring systems.

Executed by Hindustan Construction Company over a period of more than 10 years, the MSRDC's project suffered a long delay of five years owing to various hiccups. The company will also maintain the bridge for the next five years.

The public sector giant, Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), has provided almost two-thirds of the steel used in building the link.
The BWSL has gobbled up a total of nearly 22,235 tonnes of steel of which SAIL's share is pegged at over 13,780 tonnes, according to a senior SAIL official.'The steel is of the best quality and has come from our integrated plants. All the steel rods, if laid in a straight row, would measure almost 3,000 kilometres or the breadth of India,' the SAIL official said.
Although the bridge is designed for speeding at 100 km per hour, initially the MSRDC plans to impose a 50 km per hour speed limit to enable motorists to get used to the bridge and prevent accidents. Two lanes are proposed to be reserved exclusively for buses and heavy vehicles.

Yahoo Shuts Down Maven Networks | Yahoo Kills Maven In 17 Months

Yahoo Inc. said it is winding down online-video service Maven Networks, which it acquired last year for $160 million, as part of the company’s continuing effort to shed noncore properties.
In The News on 12th Feb 2008: "Yahoo announced that it has snapped up online video platform provider Maven Networks, in a $160 million deal"

Yahoo Kills Maven:
The move to close Maven comes less than onemonth after Yahoo Chief Executive Carol Bartz said video was an exciting area and that she was interested in acquiring more video technology.

Yahoo said in a statement late Monday that video initiatives remain a top priority for the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Web giant, but that it was “increasing investment in some areas while scaling back in others.”

Maven was used to manage, distribute and monetize premium online-video content for more than 30 major media companies, including CBS Corp.’s CBS Sports, GannettCo. andPearson PLC’s Financial Times.

This is the third video property Yahoo has killed off in less than 8 months, after shutting both Y!Live, a live video streaming service, and Jumpcut, an online video editing tool. Remarkably, Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz recently declared on stage at a conference that the company is actually still interested in acquiring startups in the business of digital video technology.

One month and the shuttering of a $160 million video technology acquisition later, it’s close to comical reading those words again. Then again, Yahoo’s prospects and financials at the time the acquisition was made sure looked a whole lot better than they do today, so maybe it’s just too easy to judge the move in hindsight.

Either way, Maven Networks is now a member of the deadpool club, although there’s always the possibility of Yahoo selling off Maven to someone who wants to revive it.

Maven Networks (www.maven.net) is an online video platform provider with end-to-end video syndication, content management and advertising solution. Maven helps media companies create, distribute and profit from direct-to-consumer Internet TV channels and networks.
The Maven Internet TV Platform(TM) is used by organizations such as CanWest, CBS Sports, CBC, CNET, Gannett, The Financial Times, Fox Business Network, Fox News, Hearst, MediaNews Group, Ogilvy, Scripps Networks, Sony BMG, Sony Pictures Television, and TV Guide.
