How To Conserve Battery Life On iPad

The iPad includes a non-removable lithium-polymer battery that provides up to 10 hours of use on a single charge. In fact, Apple claims that 10 hours of video playback, surfing the Web using Wi-Fi, or listening to music are possible. You can check the state of the battery by looking at the indicator in the upper-right corner of the screen.

Note: To show or hide the percentage next to the battery indicator, go to Settings > General and tap the Battery Percentage switch.

As the battery nears depletion, warning messages appear when 20 percent and 10 percent of the power remains. After that, the iPad becomes unresponsive and needs to be charged to function again.

To replenish the battery’s charge, plug the iPad’s sync cable into the included power adapter (charging takes about four hours if the battery is nearly spent).

You can also plug the sync cable into your computer to sync and recharge, but there’s a catch: Your computer’s USB port may not have the oomph to do it. If that’s the case, you’ll see “Not Charging” in the power indicator at the upper-right corner of the screen.

How To Save the iPad Battery From Depletion

The specifications for running power over USB call for at least 5V (volts), but the iPad requires more than that. Some computers, such as recent Apple laptops and desktops, can optionally provide as much as 12V when a device that requires it is connected. In that case, the iPad will charge, but more slowly than when connected to the power adapter.

Advantage of charging your iPad Using USB Port:

The upside is that when connected to a low-power USB port, the battery does not deplete; in fact, it will trickle-charge slowly when the iPad is asleep, and keep a steady level when it’s awake.

Steps To Conserve battery life on iPad

You can take steps to make the most of the battery’s charge. No need to be slavish about these, but you’ll definitely want to implement them when you get a low battery notice:

  • Turn down the screen brightness.
  • Turn off Wi-Fi if you’re not within range of a wireless network.
  • Turn off Bluetooth if you’re not using it.
  • Disable Push notifications.
  • Disable 3G networking (provided you own the 3G model) if you’re not accessing data online.

Actual battery life depends on how you use the iPad, of course—playing a video game that makes extensive use of 3D graphics is more demanding on the processor and will eat up power faster than reading a book in iBooks.

Android Apps With Ads Consume 75% More Battery Consumption

Apart from being obnoxiously annoying, those pesky ads that pop-up within our Android apps are actually taking up to 75 percent of the app's total power consumption.

This result was found with the help of an energy profiler named EProf that can analyze the power consumption of a device by monitoring each and every app. The team performed this test on a Nexus One running Android 2.3 with some popular apps such as Angry Birds, FreeChess and the New York Times app.

While testing Angry Birds, it was found that the game itself consumed only 20 percent of the total power consumed by the app. The remaining of it was used to display the ads. To do this, the phone has to upload the user's location to a server and then download the ad over a data connection. The location upload happens the first time only but the ad data is downloaded with every new level. Similar results were obtained with FreeChess as well.

But it is hard to believe, download and taking location takes insignificant amount of time while app is running, especially in case of games. If level takes (say) 120 seconds, while taking position and downloading 1 second - this cannot consume 75% of power especially comparing to high CPU/GPU/screen usage. May be, in some special cases, when ad displaying was badly implemented.

Basically, when your phone tells you Angry Birds used 30 percent of your phone's battery, only 20 percent of that 30 percent was used by the game and the rest was used for showing you ads.

Android is usually slammed for consuming a lot of power, the fault lies with the ads within the apps and the apps themselves, which are often poorly coded with little to no optimization for the device it is running on.

As a user, there is little you can do now apart from buying paid versions of the apps that don't serve ads and hoping that this research makes developers improve their apps and find a better way to make a revenue than serving ads.

The EProf app will soon be made available for download under an open source license. The team is also working on bringing it to Windows Phone.

Here is a quick fix for battery problem on Android.

Put the Brightness on Auto, Turn off the GPS and set the network to GSM or WCDMA only (NOT AUTO GSM/WCDMA).

Network GSM (if 3G Connection is available often) and WIFI can be off or on depending upon your usage.  (I have wireless data at work and home, so I will keep it on).

If you really don’t need DATA connection on your android, you can turn of data..of course the life of the battery will improve further. .but I want data so this is the best compromise for me. But smart phones are for data…

Tips To Increase Battery Life Of Samsung Galaxy Ace

Seems that the battery on Samsung Galaxy Ace is draining pretty faster even when WiFi, GPS and GPRS were Off. The point is, if you want more from your Samsung Galaxy Ace, you need to plan accordingly as 1350 MH battery is not enough for this smart phone.

OK, here lets see if there is any solution to the Battery Life Of Samsung Galaxy Ace. Yea, buying another battery with higher capacity when it's available is an alternative to those who have less time between charges.

If you are not really keen on the display picture or image, try to make something with a dark color, (No live wall papers), preferable black. This will help you, because bright colors use a lot of battery. Make the brightness to Zero.

There are few other things you can do to increase the Battery Performance of Samsung Galaxy Ace.

3G is THE worst thing for zapping battery, especially if you are in an area with a poor signal. Your handset will spent all time trying to connect & re-connect to 3G, so is not really in standby.

If you are in a location where 3G Service is not stable, better turn it off. Go back to the normal 2G / GPRS Connection. Because, Samsung Galaxy Ace always trying to search for the network and switch between GPRS and 3G, which in turn drains the battery very faster. You can turn back the 3G When it is needed.

Shut down apps which were running in the background like Facebook, Maps etc.

The above said should help you save your battery for some time. If you still want to experiment, turn off Auto-Rotate and Bluetooth along with brightness if you are not too much concerned about it.

Don't use advance task killer, But if you use advance task killer to kill task frequently your CPU will always do the heavy job on opening application instead of just fetching it from the RAM.

Also, give the battery a chance to get used to your usage patterns. I've had the Ace since March & after a poor start I now get 3 days sometimes, or at least 1-2 days with "normal" use, with a bit of 3g, bit of WiFi, games, playing music, a couple of calls & about 10-20 texts. Not bad I think! Maybe the motto for all Ace users should be "be patient"!

For me, It lasts 2 days, at the middle of the third day i have to charge. I not on 3G network, brightness is down, but i use WiFi, music, games through the day. But I used to terminate the process when I am done with it.

  • 1) Disable GPRS / 3G immediately.
  • 2) Kill un-used services in Task Manager
  • 3) Turn off Brightness. Or set Brightness to zero.
  • 4) Make sure you have black wall paper and no live wall papers.

In general, for a Demanding user who would still need to use most of the smartphone's features from time to time; e.g., mailing, web, GPS, 3G and so on, Buying Samsung Galaxy Ace will not be a best option. You need to try something better with larger battery capacity.

Windows 8 Gives More Battery Life With Less Memory Consumption

Windows 8 is set to significantly reduce the overall runtime memory requirements of the core system. This is always good for everyone and especially in a world where people want to run more and more apps at the same time or run on systems with only 1 or 2GB of memory. Also, the reduced amount of RAM will result is better battery performance, that we will see in the end of this post how this is possible.

The runtime memory usage of Windows 8 is an important factor in determining the Windows 8 system requirements, as well as the broadened spectrum of devices that will host Windows 8. Windows 8 is delivered on SoC-based devices characterized by low power consumption. This makes it even more important to leave lots of memory available for multiple concurrent apps and to sustain the overall responsiveness of devices.

Memory usage goals:

Windows 8 is planned to ship with the same system requirements as Windows 7. What it mean is, people running on Windows 7-era hardware would have the option to easily upgrade their existing machines to Windows 8 and take advantage of the functionality it has to offer.

An important task for Windows 8 was to make room for new functionality while looking for opportunities to reduce the memory consumed by existing functionality and consumed across the board. Windows 8 is tracking well towards meeting the goal we set ourselves.

The easiest way to make a ballpark comparison of Windows 8 vs. Windows 7 memory use is to install both operating systems on a 1GB RAM machine (minimum OS RAM requirement) and compare them when they’ve been rebooted multiple times, and then idled for a while.

The Windows Task Manager contains the main view of system memory through its “In Use” statistic (described in detail in this doc). The below graphics compare memory consumption on Steven’s 3+ year old netbook that he was using at the //build/ keynote recently, running Windows 7 at idle, and then with the same machine running Windows 8.

The specific hardware making up a machine, memory use of drivers, and even uptime can cause variability, so memory results will be different on different machines (or even the same machine at different times). As you can see though, Windows 8 is doing well relative to Windows 7.

For a bit of extra fun on a test machine, go to device manager and disable your display adapter (unload the graphics driver). You’d never run your machine this way but this does give you an even closer approximation of the memory use of Windows itself. With a disabled graphics driver, the machine above gets under 200MB after idling for a while.

NOTE: For Windows 8, a clean install also contains the extended Windows Defender technology, which, for the first time incorporates complete antimalware functionality – also optimized for memory and resource. This functionality does not exist on a clean install of Windows 7 where we would recommend that you add security software.

Do you know, the reduced amount of RAM will result is better battery performance. Something that might not be obvious is that minimizing memory usage on low-power platforms can prolong battery life. Huh? In any PC, RAM is constantly consuming power. If an OS uses a lot of memory, it can force device manufacturers to include more physical RAM. The more RAM you have on board, the more power it uses, the less battery life you get. Having additional RAM on a tablet device can, in some instances, shave days off the amount of time the tablet can sit on your coffee table looking off but staying fresh and up to date.

How To Effectively Increase Battery Life On Windows Phone

Charging Your Phone and Managing Battery Life: Windows Phones use lithium-ion batteries. Although you probably don’t have to plug it in to an outlet right away, the first time you do plug it in, you should allow it to charge overnight. It is not just for Windows Phone mobiles, but you need to follow this rule to all your devices that has a lithium-ion batteries.

You’ll hear all kinds of “battery lore” out there that’s left over from earlier battery technologies. For example, lithium-ion batteries don’t have a “memory” like NiCad batteries did. So, you don’t have to be careful to allow the battery to fully discharge before recharging it.

One of the advantage of NiCad batteries is that’s, NiCad batteries are more difficult to damage than other batteries, tolerating deep discharge for long periods. In fact, NiCd batteries in long-term storage are typically stored fully discharged. This is in contrast, for example, to lithium ion batteries, which are less stable and will be permanently damaged if discharged below a minimum voltage.

Your phone comes with at least one battery charger. When it comes to charging, Windows Phone 7 devices can be very different from one manufacturer and cellular carrier to the next. In addition to the battery charger that comes in the box with the phone, you may have several other charging options:

  • Wall charger: A wall charger plugs in to the power port on your phone and allows you to charge the phone from a standard electrical outlet. Unplug the battery charger when you aren’t charging your phone. If you leave the charger plugged in, there will be a small but continuous draw of power.
  • Travel charger: What distinguishes a travel charger from a regular wall charger is that the prongs fold in to the wall bug (the plug that you stick into the outlet). Some manufacturers ship a travel charger with the phone; others don’t.
  • Car charger: A car charger lets you charge your phone from an outlet in your car (sometimes from your cigarette lighter).
  • Fuel cell or photocell charger: Several companies make products that can charge your phone if you don’t have access to a wall outlet or a car outlet.

The best practice to managing your battery well is to buy a charger that is designed to work with your Windows Phone and that comes from a reputable manufacturer. A cheaper alternative to what you can buy at the cellular store is not necessarily a bargain. Cheap chargers may physically fit in the charging port on your phone and may charge the phone, but lithium-ion batteries are sensitive to voltage, and your off-brand charger may hurt the performance of your battery.

High heat shortens the life of your battery. Be careful not to leave your phone on your car’s dashboard. In general, if you keep your phone with you — except when you sit in a sauna or sweat lodge — you’ll be safe.

If you take good care of it, your battery should last about two years with a drop in performance of about 25 percent from the condition it was in when you took it out of the box. At that point, you can replace the battery or upgrade to the newest Windows Phone. And of course you can move on to the next version of Windows Phone as you are moving to the newest. Battery life can usually only be extended by preventing or reducing the cause of the unwanted parasitic chemical effects which occur in the cells. Ways of improving battery life and hence reliability are also considered below.

Battery performance deteriorates over time whether the battery is used or not. This is known as "calendar fade". Performance also deteriorates with usage and this is known as "cycle fade".

To make your mobile phones work or can be known as energy backups. These are very much affordable, very economic, and compatible. Mobile batteries also help in supporting the talk time. They all can be recharged with mobile chargers. The more the company name, the more the mobile batteries.

Here are few tricks to save your stand by time of Mobile. That is to save battery.

  • Switch on data network mode to 2G if you are not using 3G.
  • If you are using Samsung Android OS, use ATKs from market.
  • Keep your  screen to the viewable brightness and not to the fullest.
  • Switch off wi-fi, Bluetooth, GPS (if not using)
  • Use dark background wallpaper(if its black then its great)and try to avoid live wallpapers if you can.
